Brand History
Founded in 1820 by John Taylor in Sheffield, England, Taylor’s Eye Witness began as a humble workshop, soon becoming a symbol of quality in cutlery. By 1838, the iconic “Eye Witness” trademark was established, symbolized by an all-seeing eye, a mark of excellence recognized globally.
After Taylor’s passing in 1854, the company thrived under Sarah Taylor and Thomas Brown Needham, evolving into Needham, Veall & Tyzack by 1879. The firm, renowned for its innovative spirit, was at the forefront of mechanizing cutlery manufacturing. They offered an extensive range of products, from elegant pocketknives to durable kitchen knives, embracing over two thousand designs.
The early 20th century brought the advent of Martensitic Stainless Steel, revolutionizing cutlery manufacturing. Taylor’s Eye Witness quickly adapted, integrating this new material into their products. However, this period also marked increased global competition, leading to strategic consolidations within the Sheffield cutlery industry.
By 1975, the brand, now part of Harrison Fisher & Co., was renamed Taylor’s Eye Witness Ltd. This era saw significant product development, with contributions from renowned designer Robert Welch, whose designs remain in production today.
In 2018, Taylor’s Eye Witness embarked on a new journey, relocating to a modern facility outside Sheffield. This move marked a balance between honoring their rich heritage and embracing modern efficiency and growth.
Today, Taylor’s Eye Witness stands as a testament to over 180 years of combined American and British craftsmanship. The brand continues to innovate, designing and manufacturing a wide range of kitchenware, and representing prominent international brands in the UK and Ireland. Their enduring commitment to quality and innovation cements their place as a leader in the cutlery industry.
